The Macau Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, shortened to Macau or Macao (See Names), is a small peninsula on the southern coast of China.
It refers to the northern part of the Macau peninsula, and the northern part of the Macau peninsula is situated near the border of China.
Macau has generally flat terrain resulting from extensive land reclamation, but numerous steep hills mark the original natural land mass.

Macau's Patuá started to gradually develop after the Portuguese settled on the southern tip of the peninsula around 1557.
Patuá started gradually to evolve in Macau in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, namely among Portuguese settlers and their mixed-race descendents from Malacca and Macau.
The most notable exception is Macau's late educationalist and philologist Graciete Nogueira Batalha, who published a large number of studies on Patuá, which she described as the Macanese dialect.
