The University of Manchester in Manchester, England, was formed by the merger of the Victoria University of Manchester (commonly known as the University of Manchester before the merger) and UMIST (University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology) on 1 October 2004.
The President and Vice-Chancellor of the new University is Alan Gilbert, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne.

The Victoria University of Manchester (VUM) was a university in Manchester in England.
In 1903, the University's college in Liverpool left the Victoria University to become the independent University of Liverpool and Leeds followed in 1904 to become the University of Leeds.
On March 5, 2003 it was announced that the University was to merge with UMIST on October 1 2004, to form the largest conventional university in the UK.

The University of Manchester has a long and well established history in nuclear-physics research, starting with the pioneering experiments of Ernest Rutherford in the early years of the 20th Century.
It was at Manchester that Rutherford demonstrated the existence of the atomic nucleus using alpha-particle scattering experiments.
A major new project with which the Manchester group is involved is the construction and use of the CLARA detector array and PRISMA magnetic spectrometer at Legnaro National Laboratory in Italy, in order to study the structure of "exotic" nuclei.

Scientists at The University of Manchester have developed a new type of adhesive, which mimics the mechanism employed by geckos (a type of lizard) to climb surfaces, including glass ceilings.
Researchers within the newly opened Manchester Centre for Mesoscience and Nanotechnology at the University have been working on the new adhesive since 2001, after learning the mechanism of gecko's climbing skills from biophysicists.
The Manchester Centre for Mesoscience and Nanotechnology was opened by Lord Sainsbury in April 2003.

We have a close relationship with the Manchester Centre for Political Theory (MANCEPT) within the Politics Discipline Area, and students on our undergraduate and MA courses are encouraged to take course units in political theory and political philosophy offered by MANCEPT.
Our research and teaching areas lie mostly within the tradition of analytic philosophy, with special emphasis on five key areas: metaphysics; aesthetics and ethics; epistemology; the history of analytical philosophy; and the philosophy of mind.

The Small-Scale Experimental Machine, known as SSEM, or the "Baby", was designed and built at The University of Manchester, and made its first successful run of a program on June 21st 1948.
From this Small-Scale Experimental Machine a full-sized machine was designed and built, the Manchester Mark 1, which by April 1949 was generally available for computation in scientific research in the University.
The Mark 1 and the next three machines were all turned into commercial machines; the fifth, MU5, made a major contribution to the design of the ICL VME2900 series.
