In 1948, the Eastern Shore Branch of the University of Maryland, popularly known as Princess Anne College, became officially Maryland State College, a division of the University of Maryland.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore has announced a $3 million gift from Richard F. Hazel, a former president of the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. in Salisbury, to benefit the school's teacher education program.
In recognition of Hazel's gift — the largest private gift on record to one of Maryland's historically fl colleges and universities — the school will name its new education, social science, and health science building Hazel Hall.
The gift will be used to create the Hazel Endowment at UMES, which will award full-tuition scholarships, both undergraduate and graduate, to education majors from the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia, as well as Sussex County, Delaware, fund a professorship in the department of education, and support seminars and workshops for education faculty.
