		UMUC is an outgrowth of the University of Maryland's evening program for adults that began in the 1920s.
		UMUC has a small campus in Adelphi, Maryland, adjacent to the campus of University of Maryland at College Park, as well facilities in Elkridge and Waldorf, MD, Heidelberg, Germany and on Yokota Air Base outside of Tokyo, Japan.
		UMUC is a college in the traditional American sense of the word, albeit one associated with a university.

		On March 6, 1856, the University of Maryland was chartered as the Maryland Agricultural College (MAC).
		On April 9, 1920, the college merged with the preestablished professional schools in Baltimore to form the University of Maryland.
		However, in 1997 the Maryland General Assembly passed legislation allowing the University of Maryland, College Park to be known simply as the University of Maryland, recognizing the campus's role as the flagship institution of the University System of Maryland.
