The University of Missouri System is one of two public state university systems in the state of Missouri.
The University of Missouri was founded in 1839 in Columbia which remained the sole campus until 1870, when a school of mines and metallurgy was established in Rolla.
In 1963 the University of Kansas City, which had been a private institution, was acquired by the University and a new campus was created in St. Louis, creating the present four campus system.
