By the 1920s, the institution's preferred name was Montana State College and so it remained until July 1, 1965, when, in recognition of the enormous advances in the college's commitment to scientific and humanistic research, the 39th legislative assembly of the state of Montana changed MSC's name to Montana State University.
Montana State University is a comprehensive, multipurpose institution maintaining, in the land-grant tradition, programs of instruction, research, and public service.
FUTURE GOALS: To support Montana State University's mission as a modern land grant university whose emphases are in the areas of agriculture, the professions (i.e., architecture, business, computer science, education, engineering, and nursing), and the physical, biological, and health sciences; and to maintain the level of excellence that has long distinguished Montana State.
