NAPLES, Fla. (CNS) -- Tom Monaghan, founder of Domino's Pizza, is putting about $200 million toward the opening of a new Catholic university outside of Naples and building a town to go with it.
Construction has already begun on a seven-acre interim campus for the university in Naples, with classroom buildings, student and faculty residences, a campus chapel and an indoor-outdoor recreational facility, that will be ready for the fall of 2003.
The university is planning initially to have 650 students at the new campus and to grow to approximately 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

 Purdue honors university supporters in Naples, Fla.
NAPLES, Fla. — Purdue University officials on Saturday (Feb. 11) honored several people with Florida ties who have contributed more than $20.5 million to university programs ranging from engineering to veterinary medicine.
Though not a graduate of Purdue, she has been a strong supporter of the university and serves on the Purdue Musical Organizations Advisory Council.
Also honored in Naples were the anonymous donors of a $1 million deferred gift to be shared by the College of Liberal Arts' endowed scholarship program, Department of Communication's endowed teaching award, Purdue Musical Organization's Purduettes and the College of Engineering's endowed scholarships.

While the Physician Assistant Program — Naples offers all of the educational opportunities of the Fort Lauderdale program, it is planned to stay smaller and, therefore, more intimate.
The maximum enrollment for the Naples campus will be 60 with a plan to admit closer to 50 students per year.
The Naples Physician Assistant Program has now been awarded provisional accreditation, and matriculated its first class of 40 students in June of 2005 and has just matriculated its second class of 48 students June of 2006.

Giovanni Battista Vico was born in Naples, Italy, June 23 1688, to a bookseller and daughter of a carriage maker.
Vico lived in great poverty and suffered bouts of ill-health, and failed in his life-long ambition of succeeding to the chair of Jurisprudence at the University of Naples, having to settle instead for a lower and poorly paid professorship in Rhetoric.
Once combined, however, they form a doctrine which yields a full knowledge of facts where "knowledge" in the Vichean sense means to have grasped both the necessity of human affairs (manifest in the causal connections between otherwise random events) and the contingency of the events which form the content of the causal chains.

When you say "University of Naples," most hear that as a reference to the "Frederick II" university, the institution founded by and named for that great Holy Roman emperor.
One such person was the Jesuit, Matteo Ripa, from the kingdom of Naples, who worked at the Manchu court of the emperor Kangxi between 1711 and 1733.
He returned to Naples from China with four young Chinese Christians, all teachers of their native language; they formed the nucleus of what would become the "Chinese Institute" of Naples, sanctioned by Pope Clement XII in 1732 to teach Chinese to missionaries and thus advance the propagation of Christianity in China.

All those of us in the Italian department who worked with Mirella Cheeseman and came to know her well and appreciate her charming presence and impeccable work ethics, were left saddened by her recent and premature passing.
Born in Naples, Italy, Mirella enjoyed all the privileges of her family’s aristocratic heritage and wealthy status, a situation that was however changed by the horrors of World War II.
In the post-war era Mirella completed her education, which culminated with a law degree from the University of Naples.

 UMR News and Research: UMR creates scholar program with University of Naples Federico II
Six graduate students from the University of Naples Federico II, founded in 1224 in Naples, Italy, are conducting research this summer at the University of Missouri-Rolla as part of a new scholar program between the two universities.
During the next four months, the students will work to complete their thesis in the areas of materials and civil engineering under the advisement of UMR faculty members and with funding from Mapei, a chemical construction company, and the national University Transportation Center at UMR.
Carolina Mallardo, who is studying “Characterization of thin polymer gels using various spectroscopic methods” under the direction of Dr. David Henthorn, assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering.
