 University of New Mexico Launches Effort Against Hepatitis C
An estimated 32,000 people in New Mexico are infected with the hepatitis C virus, and less than 5 percent of them are getting treatment.
Sanjeev Arora, professor of gastroenterology at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, is working with others on a program that will help train health care workers around the state to manage the disease and its complex treatment.
He said UNM's training is helping the district's doctors and nurses have more confidence and greater comfort in their ability to treat hepatitis C. He said 20 to 25 new cases per month are diagnosed at his office.

The University of California and a consortium of New Mexico higher education institutions, led by the University of New Mexico, today (March 24) announced their intent to form an Institute for Advanced Studies affiliated with Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).
This agreement solidifies the role of New Mexico universities as part of the teaming arrangement for a bid to compete for the Los Alamos National Laboratory contract, should the UC Board of Regents authorize such a bid.
The University of New Mexico is also one of the national university collaborators in the Battelle Energy Alliance that manages the Idaho National Laboratory.

Russia, the Netherlands and the United States were among the countries represented Wednesday, Jan. 28 at the first meeting of the International Thermionic Society held at the New Mexico Engineering Research Institute (NMERI) at the University of New Mexico.
They are familiar with UNM, having spent several years at NMERI in the early 1990s working on the Topaz International Program.
The idea for the new organization emerged in October, but founders waited until Wednesday for the official organization meeting because of the large number of thermionics experts who were going to be in Albuquerque for the space conference.
