It was formerly known as the University of Newark, which was merged with Rutgers in 1946 by an act of the New Jersey legislature.
The University of Newark was established in 1935, growing out from the consolidation of five educational institutions in Newark—namely, Dana College, the Newark Institute of Arts and Sciences, the Seth Boyden School of Business, the Mercer Beasley School of Law, and the New Jersey Law School.
