Henry Wardlaw, the Bishop of St. Andrews, granted a charter of privilege in 1411; he sought a Bull of foundation from the antipope, Benedict XIII, whose legate he was and whose claims Scotland supported.
The university consisted of three colleges: St. Salvator's, founded in 1450 by Bishop James Kennedy, confirmed and further privileged by Popes Nicholas V, Pius II, and Paul II; St. Leonard's, founded by Archbishop Stuart and Prior Hepburn in 1512; and St. Mary's, founded by Archbishop James Beaton, under sanction of Paul III, in 1537.

Abstract: Scholar and poet Jay Parini was born in Pittston in 1948.
Parini attended Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, but he used his junior year to study abroad at the University of Saint Andrews, Scotland.
He enjoyed Scotland so much that after finishing his A.B. at Lafayette in 1970, Parini immediately returned to the University of Saint Andrews where he received a Ph.D. in 1975.

 Samuel Rutherford (1600-1661)
He graduated from Edinburgh University in 1621; two years later, he was appointed the regent of humanity at his alma mater.
In 1627, Rutherford assumed a pulpit in the parish of Anwoth in Galloway; he served there until 1636, when he was deposed on account of his non-conformist religious convictions and exiled to Aberdeen.
Two years later, after his exile was lifted, Rutherford returned to Anwoth; shortly thereafter, he was appointed professor of divinity at the University of Saint Andrews.
