For over forty years the University was the center of political opposition to the government: a source of criticism of the country's economic and social inequality, and a place where leftist intellectuals have formulated alternatives to this reality.
The University of San Carlos, though a State institution, has been brutally attacked by the State, both by regular forces and by terrorist paramilitary groups that it controlled or sanctioned.
The goal of this investigation is to document the State's violence against the university community, from 1954 to 1996, almost always extra-judicial and in opposition to the rule of law, a part of the Guatemalan tragedy.

A faculty member of University of San Carlos' (USC) Biology Department, Jumalon stumbled upon the butterfly flitting in three places-the Kawasan Waterfalls in Badian town, along the Tapon River and forest patches of Dalaguete town, and the Nugas forests in Alcoy town.
Seidenschwarz and other USC researchers are building survival habitats for insects and plants endemic or native and found only in Cebu.
The USC studies underpin efforts to conserve unique and endangered species that are endemic to Cebu, within the university's Nature Park on its sprawling campus in Barangay Talamban in Cebu City.

It was discovered by USC researchers on the island's remaining forest patches.
A few specimens are kept in the zoos of San Diego, California and in Silliman University in Negros Oriental.
The USC scientists have since reported spotting birds, once thought extinct, in Cebu's remaining forest patches: the dark-throated oriole, Cebu flower-pecker (Dicaceum quadricolor) and the fl shama (siloy).
