The University of Sydney, established in Sydney in 1850, is the oldest university in Australia.
In January 2005, the University of Sydney transferred the OAC to Charles Sturt University.
The New England University College was founded as part of the University of Sydney in 1938, and separated to become the University of New England in 1954.

Fisher Library is the main library of the University and located on Eastern Avenue in the Darlington/Camperdown campus of University of Sydney adjacent to Victoria Park.
Although the University library had previously been housed in the main building, in what is presently the Senate Room, its collection was moved to the purpose-built Fisher Library when it was completed in 1908.

 SETIS: Electronic Texts at the University of Sydney Library
From the initial library group concerned with the project a full- time Coordinator was appointed for the service and space within the Library was found for the new service.
At the University of Virginia and a number of other sites, large bodies of text encoded in SGML (Standard Generalised Markup Language) are made available via a web interface with the Open Text search engine (originally developed to search the Oxford English Dictionary).
Many of these are commercial texts and are restricted for use at the University of Sydney only (this is regulated by IP address of the client machine.) However, some public domain texts and texts created at SETIS will be unrestricted and, therefore, available globally.

 SETIS: Electronic Texts at the University of Sydney Library
At the beginning of 1995 the Library approached a number of staff in the Arts Faculty on the feasibility of establishing an electronic text centre similar to centres already established at a number of universities in the United States.
SETIS was in large part modelled upon the initiatives taken at the University of Virginia by David Seaman.
It is interesting that from the initial meeting of academic and Library staff there was a general consensus that this was an entirely appropriate thing for the library to be involved in.

 The Sydney University SILLIAC
SILLIAC was "an almost exact copy of the automatic computer at the University of Illinois, the ILLIAC, and as it is the Sydney version of the ILLIAC, it has been called the SILLIAC", according to the SILLIAC Programming Manual.
They are: the Active Library, the Auxiliary Library, and the Statistical Library.

 Pathfinder: Australian Health Law
Sometimes the looseleaf versions of legislation are more up to date than the electronic ones, as the services are often updated weekly whereas the electronic databases subscribed to by the Library are for the most part are updated monthly (and sometimes quarterly).

 The Scholarly Electronic Text and Image Service
The Scholarly Electronic Text and Image Service (SETIS) at the University of Sydney Library provides access to a large number of networked and in-house full text databases, primarily but not exclusively, source texts within the humanities.
Through grants and sponsorships obtained from outside the library budget SETIS seeks to create full text databases based upon the TEI guidelines for text encoding and interchange.
Digital library initiatives include the collection of Australian Literary and Historical Texts which began in response to the national Australian Cooperative Digitisation Project 1840–45 and has most recently grown through SETIS' participation in the Australian Literature Electronic Gateway.
