According to the results of the international survey conducted for the fifth time by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the University of Szeged is still at an outstanding place among the best 500 universities of the world in the year of 2007.
Beside the University of Szeged, there was only one Hungarian higher education institution among the 500 leading ones of the world at that time, namely the Eötvös Lóránd University (ELTE) in Budapest.
University of Szeged organizes Industry Day for the first time on 9th November 2006, with the purpose of introducing industrial researches, providing meeting and consultancy forum for both researchers and industrial partners.

In 1991 the leaders of the institutions of higher education in Szeged signed an agreement to merge these institutions into a unified, sizable center of higher education, to be called the University of Szeged.
In Hungarian universities, as elsewhere in most of Europe, undergraduate and graduate studies are not formally separated but form integral parts of a unified curriculum leading directly to a diploma comparable to the American Master's degree.
Some of these are provided by the university club (in the central building) and the extra curricular programs of the dormitories, others by the sports facilities, and the town's off-campus recreational facilities.

 City rises from ruins of great flood - The Budapest Times
Szent-Györgyi, a biochemist from the University of Szeged won the Nobel Prize in 1937 for extracting vitamin C from paprika, thereby opening the path to synthesising this vitamin which his American colleague Linus Pauling later on did and for which he, too, received the Nobel.
In 1962 the University of Szeged assumed the name of the great Hungarian poet, Attila József, who was a student here in the 1920s, although it was dropped in favour of the University of Szeged a few years back.
Szeged’s once-good connections with the region are gone, with roads leading to areas lost in the Trianon peace treaty of 1920 cut down.

The development and results in mathematical research and education at the university of Szeged are based on the spirit and achievements of the excellent Kolozsvár (the central city of Transylvania; Cluj-Napoca in Roumanian, Clausenburg in German) mathematical school.
In 1938, Kerékjártó was appointed to the university in Budapest.
