UTD launched the first accredited telecommunications engineering degree of any university in the United States, and it is one of only a handful of institutions with a software engineering degree.

The University of Texas at Dallas is entering its inaugural season of basketball competition as a member of the NCAA Division III and the American Southwest Conference.
Ray Farrell, the first basketball coach in the history of UTD, was hired on April 6, 1998 and immediately began assembling a team for competition in the 1998-1999 season.

The University of North Texas Dallas Campus, sometimes known as the UNT System Center, is the Dallas extension campus of the University of North Texas, offering upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses.
