	Tirana - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Tirana is presently trying to develop a tourist industry, although this effort is hampered by the political instability in the region, owing to military conflicts during the 1990s in Albania and neighboring Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo and the Republic of Macedonia.
		Tirana also features the University of Tirana, founded in 1957, and many governmental and social buildings such as the Albanian Institute of Sciences, the Academy of Arts, the Agricultural University, the Military Academy, the Institute of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the People's Assembly, and the High Court.
		Tirana was founded in 1614 by the Ottoman general Sulejman Pasha, who built a mosque, a bakery and a Turkish sauna, and named it "Tehran", as a tribute to his military victory at Tehran in Persia (now Iran).

		It was the first university in Albania when it was founded in October 1957 as State University of Tirana (Universiteti Shtetëror i Tiranës) by joining five higher institutes.
		Initially it was comprised of ten faculties, but in 1991 it was broken up into the Polytechnic University which was formed of the engineering faculties and the main University of Tirana which comprised the seven remaining faculties covering humanities, economics, natural science and medicine.

		Lee, who has the title of University Eminent Scholar and Regents Professor at Nebraska, is the second person to receive an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Tirana since the end of communism in Albania in 1991.

		The Mallakastra Regional Archaeological Project is a fully integrated cooperative program of regional archaeological research, sponsored by the Institute of Archaeology (Tirana) and the Department of Classics of the University of Cincinnati (USA).
