UTS was founded jointly by the province of Ontario and the University of Toronto in 1910 as a laboratory school of the Faculty of Education.
UTS has remained a part of the University of Toronto's Faculty of Education and its successor, the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto (OISE/UT), until the beginning of 2004.

 2005 Brain Awareness Week Report
The U of T Brain Bee is one of the ways in which the University of Toronto participates in Brain Awareness Week, which is sponsored by the Society for Neuroscience.
The University of Toronto also held a Brain Day 2005 on March 22 when a grades five through seven class from Mary, Mother of God Public School in Toronto visited the university to learn about the structure and function of the human central nervous system.
The first place winner was Peter Lu from the University of Toronto Schools, second prize went to Ting Zhu and in third place was Jamie Duan, both from Earl Haig Secondary School.
