The opening of the solid oxide fuel cell facility at the University of Toronto at Mississauga (UTM) today marks Canada’s first installation of solid oxide fuel cells in a university student residence as well as the world’s first multi-unit installation.
“The University of Toronto at Mississauga is proud to be a leader in adopting emerging energy technologies,” says Ray deSouza, chief administrative officer at UTM.
Immediately, the solid oxide fuel cell systems are expected to exceed this by 10 per cent and grow to between 65 and 70 per cent efficient when heat recovery is considered.

The embryos of a long-necked, herbivorous dinosaur are the earliest ever recorded for any terrestrial vertebrate and point to how primitive dinosaurs evolved into the largest animals ever to walk on earth, say scientists from the University of Toronto at Mississauga (UTM), the Smithsonian Institution and the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa.
The discovery, published in the July 29 issue of Science, provides a rare glimpse into the life of the sauropodomorph dinosaur Massospondylus, an early dinosaur that grew to five metres and was relatively common in South Africa.
While the delicate bones of most dinosaur embryos were destroyed over time these embryos are represented by well preserved skeletons, one nicely curled up inside the egg.

 Diamonds have oceanic origin, says University of Toronto geologist
More than just symbols of wealth and beauty, diamonds are a testament to the history of the earth, says University of Toronto professor Daniel Schulze.
Schulze, a professor in the Department of Geology at the University of Toronto at Mississauga, believes that the materials that form the gem diamonds mined in Guaniamo, Venezuela, originated on the ocean floor and has found hard evidence that supports this controversial theory.
Funding for this study was provided by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the National Science Foundation.

Experts in the field hailed the study as a significant contribution to paleontology.
Along with Reisz and Scott, the study involved Dr. Hans-Dieter Sues, a paleontologist at the National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, David Evans, a graduate student at UTM, and Michael Raath, a scientist at the University of Witwatersrand.
The research was funded by the National Geographic Society, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada, the Palaeoanthropology Scientific Trust of South Africa and the University of Toronto.
