The modern University of Trier, in the German city of Trier was founded in the year 1970.
The new University campus is located on top of the Tarforst, an urban district on the outskirts of the town.
Looking even further into the history of the University, the first mention of an academic institution in Trier was made as early as 1455.

The Archbishop of Trier was, as chancellor of Burgundy, one of the seven electors of the empire, a right which originated in the 12th or 13th century, and which continued until the French Revolution.
After Trier and the electorate was taken again during the War of Palatinate Succession in 1688, in the year 1689 many cities in the electorate were destroyed systematically by the French Army.
Trier is the oldest seat of a Christian bishop in Germany.

It was founded in 1969 together with the University of Trier as Twin University Trier/Kaiserslautern and has been independent since 1975.
After the University of Kaiserslautern become independent in 1975, the spectrum of the fields offered was intentionally not extended too widely and emphasis was given to the development of existing focal points.
Studies at the University of Kaiserslautern are divided into semesters (two semesters per year), one winter semester (1st October until 31st March) and one summer semester (1st April until 30th September).

The City of Trier is situated on the River Mosel about 15 km downstream from the border with Luxembourg.
Today it has a population of about 105,000, is a regional administrative centre (capital of the Regierungsbezirk Trier), and a centre of culture, tourism and industry.
Although mainly taught by Reading Geography staff, accommodation on campus is provided by the University of Trier, one of the Reading Erasmus exchange partners, and some members of the academic staff there also participate in our programme from time to time.

Originally founded in 1473, the University of Trier was dissolved in the Napoleanic era and then reestablished in 1970.
Numerous institutes of the university are housed in the small, medieval-like center of the city.

He received his B.A. in 1976 from the University of Trier (Germany), his M.S. in 1980, also from the University of Trier, and in 1986, his Ph.D., from Free University of Berlin (Germany).
He has worked at the University of Rochester, University of North Carolina: Chapel Hill, and currently holds an Associate Professor position at Portland State University and is also the faculty director of the SOcial NETworks Research Group.
