A University source opposed to the project has alleged that the Vice-Chancellor, thought to be set to retire in approximately two years, is keen to "create a legacy for himself", even if this involves "mortgaging the future of the University."
The University plans to spend £400,000 on 'external expenditure' for the feasibility study, in addition to the £75,000 already handed to the Asia Exploratory Group.

Senior lecturers at Warwick University in the UK have voted against setting up a branch campus in Singapore due to worries about limits on academic freedom, dealing a possible setback to the city-state's ambitions to become a regional hub for higher education.
Warwick and Australia's University of New South Wales are the only two foreign universities selected by Singapore's Economic Development Board to set up a full-scale campus.
Warwick recently sent a letter to EDB asking that its students in Singapore be exempt from strict laws limiting freedom of assembly, speech and the press, and the removal of bans on homosexuality and certain religious practices on campus.

Astrophysicists at the University of Warwick have found an unusual ring of metal-rich gas orbiting very close around a white dwarf star.
However, in none of those three cases could a definite proof of an asteroid origin be made due to the lack of information on the geometry and the chemical abundance of the material found in the vicinity of these stars.
As part of their study, the Warwick team investigated data for 500 additional white dwarfs without finding conclusive evidence for another system harbouring such a disc.
