 The Canadian Association of University Teachers of German
Heier was one of the founding members of the Faculty of Arts and of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies at the University of Waterloo and taught in the Department for over thirty years.
Waterloo’s total student enrolment was 24,794 (full and part time), of which the Faculty of Arts, the largest by far, had 9,283 (3,220 undergraduate and 338 graduate full time, 5,635 and 90 part time; the vast majority of part time undergraduates were in distance education).
In co-operation with the German-Canadian community of the Region of Waterloo, the department has founded the Waterloo Centre for German Studies, whose mandate is to conduct research, teaching and programming for the university and community in the area of German heritage and German-Canadian studies.

Waterloo's early association with local arts colleges, Waterloo College (Lutheran) and St Jerome's College (Roman Catholic), ceased in 1960 when the University of St Jerome's College became federated with the University of Waterloo and Waterloo College became Waterloo Lutheran University (now WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY), a separate institution.
Waterloo was also the first university in the world to establish a faculty of mathematics and the first university in North America to make computers available to undergraduates.
The University of Waterloo, WATERLOO, Ontario, was founded in 1957 and received its Ontario charter in 1959.

After attending public and high schools in Edmonton, he enrolled at the University of Alberta in the fall of 1937 in the Faculty of Arts and Science.
Stewart arrived in Waterloo, Ontario in 1956, when he was appointed an associate professor of economics at Waterloo College (the forerunner of Waterloo Lutheran University and Wilfrid Laurier University).
After earning his PhD in Economics from Michigan State University, he returned to Waterloo Lutheran University in 1961 as a professor of economics, remaining until 1965, when he took up an appointmentat the University of Alberta.

Hagey and many members of the faculty of the college joined the new University of Waterloo (Dr. Hagey as President), and a few years later were followed by the Geography Department of the smaller institution, headed by the well-known Canadian land-use geographer, Ralph Krueger.
In 1960, a charter was granted as the University of Waterloo.
Dr. Hagey's presidency spanned the university building boom (which Waterloo preceded and in some ways outran) and the student unrest of the late 1960s.

A number of unforeseen faculty secondments – that is faculty members being asked by the University to assume other duties – as well as research grants and administrative leaves – have forced us to hold in abeyance the Master's program in Public History next year.
We also offer the option of pursuing an MA through our Tri-University Graduate Program in History (Waterloo, Laurier, Guelph) in which we will continue to mount some public history courses.

The mascot for the Faculty of Arts is a statue of a boar which was donated to the University of Waterloo Math Faculty in 1978, and in turn donated to the Arts Faculty.

Non-denominational university at Waterloo, Ont, with origins in the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary (founded 1911) and the Waterloo College of Arts (founded ca 1924 and affiliated 1925-60 with the University of Western Ontario).
