The University of Western Ontario Debating Society is the oldest student association at the University of Western Ontario.
It was originally part of the student union at the university, and was separated in 1915 and named "The New Areopagus of Western University", after the supreme tribunal of Athens.
From 1994-1997, the Society was ranked as the #1 competitive debating society in North America, on the basis of winning more major awards than any other team in the United States or Canada.

The Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate (CUSID generally, and SUCDI in French) is the national organization which governs and represents university-level debating and public speaking in Canada.
The regular tournaments held under its auspices, such as those at the University of Toronto (Hart House), the McGill University Debating Union, the University of Western Ontario Debating Society and the Queen's University Debating Union predate CUSID's formation by many decades.
He or she also represents CUSID and Canadian debating interests inside and outside of Canada, and is traditionally the Canadian representative on the World Universities Debating Council.

History The university was founded in 1878 by Bishop Isaac Hellmuth of the Anglican Diocese of Huron as "The Western University of London Ontario." It incorporated Huron College, which had been founded in 1863.
In 1916 the current site of the university was purchased from the Kingsmill family, and in 1923 the name of the university was changed to its present form.
The University College tower, one of the most distinctive features of the university, was named the Middlesex Memorial Tower in honour of the men from Middlesex County who had fought in World War I (all 40 male students at the university in 1914 had enlisted).

As both the capitalist market and the industrial revolution began in the west at approximately the same time, the free and open market, which was a cornerstone of the western political/economic system, was seen and remains to be seen as the source of degradation.
Granted, there was a heightened degree of effluence with the induction of the industrial revolution, but the levels of acid rain never reached the point of stripping gold off of Cathedrals as was the case in communist Poland - a place where the government was supposed to manage property for everyone and thereby eliminate pollution.

DEBATE CENTRAL is a service of the Lawrence Debate Union at the University of Vermont.
It is for this reason that I would request all those societies who do not mind their budget being made public to us (we will not under any circumstances forward this info beyond the society and the admin council) please do so.
Since several of the debaters I know have some CEDA experience of at least have coaches that understand research (actually, any college student who has written a term paper should understand the rudiments of research), it is hard for me to accept that this lack of knowledge is due to a lack of ability.
