Founded in 1848, it is the largest university in the state with a total Fall 2005 enrollment of 41,480 students, of whom approximately 29,000 are undergraduates.
In the years 1966 through 1970, the University of Wisconsin was shaken by a series of student protests, and by the use of force by authorities in response.
Wisconsin has been one of the leading public universities in the United States since the beginning of the 20th century and ranks as one of the great research universities of the world.

The University of Wisconsin-Superior was founded in 1893, although its current name dates from 1971 when it became part of the University of Wisconsin System.
UW-Superior is known as the Yellow Jackets and compete in NCAA Division III.
They are members of the WIAC (Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) for most sports and the NCHA (Northern Collegiate Hockey Association)in Hockey, arguably Superior's best sport.

Wisconsin pioneers of the 1830s and '40s, largely Irish, German and Scandinavian immigrants, came West on paddlewheel steamboats.
The Wisconsin Historical Society is one of the nation's largest American history research centers, with nearly 4 million published items and more than 100,000 cubic feet of manuscripts, photos, and other unpublished records in its collections.
The focus of the Collection is primarily on Lake Superior and its environs, especially the twin ports of Superior (WI) and Duluth MN), as well as the work of the Corps of Engineers' office in Duluth, MN.

University of Virginia President John T. Casteen III today announced that David J. Prior, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, will become the seventh chancellor of the University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
Ernest H. Ern, a retired senior vice president and professor of the University of Virginia, finished a one-year as interim chancellor in June.
Founded in 1954 as the Clinch Valley College of the University of Virginia, today the University of Virginia’s College at Wise is a nationally ranked, public liberal arts institution and the only branch of the University of Virginia.

We were on the 10 O'clock news on Saturday night (channel 6) and had an article published on the front page of the local section of the Sunday edition of the Duluth News Tribune.
It was a tricky undertaking - considering that Wisconsin Point is a 2.5 mile long sandbar with one road in and out.
Wisconsin Point, along with Minnesota Point, reportedly make up the largest freshwater sandbar in the world.

Although I grew up on the shore of Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota, I never had an opportunity to venture out on the "Big Lake" until the summer of my junior year of high school.
I earned my bachelor's degree in biology at the University of Wisconsin- Superior and was able to continue to work with research scientists at the University's Lake Superior Research Institute during the four years that it took to earn my degree.
I went to the University of Wisconsin in Madison to earn my doctorate degree in zoology, but found that I couldn't stay away from Lake Superior.
