The largest university college, the College of Letters and Science, enrolls approximately half of the undergraduate student body and is made up of thirty-nine departments and five professional schools [1] that instruct students and carry out research in a wide variety of fields such as biology, astronomy, history, and sociology.
Wisconsin has been one of the leading public universities in the United States since the beginning of the 20th century (it was a founding member of the Association of American Universities) and ranks as one of the great research universities of the world.
In the years 1966 through 1970, the University of Wisconsin was shaken by a series of student protests, and by the use of force by authorities in response.

Students who choose to apply to a UW System campus using a paper application for admission should contact the University of Wisconsin System campus to which they plan to apply and request an application packet be sent.
International students who have attended a college or university, inside or outside of the United States, are required to submit an official record of their work from each institution attended.
Other University of Wisconsin institutions may require the results of achievement tests (like the ACT, SAT I) in addition to an English language proficiency test.

At Georgetown University in Washington, foreign student advisers have documented workarounds to the SEVIS system in a user guide, which the advisers created on their own after deciding the government-issued manual was useless.
So, if a student who entered a university in 1999 as an undergraduate is scheduled to start a graduate program in 2003, the school must change his program from a bachelor's degree to a master's track and then extend the date of completion two years.

Tuition will increase an average of just $133 per semester for UW System resident undergraduates for the 2002-03 academic year under a plan approved by the UW Board of Regents Monday, July 8.
Similar institutions of higher education are increasing tuition at much higher rates for this fall to make up for their reductions in state support.
UW System tuition levels include an additional 5 percent increase required by state law for non-resident undergraduate students.
