Due to the 1959 Extenstion of University Education Act the school was only allowed to register a small number of fl students for most of the apartheid era, even though several notable fl anti-apartheid leaders graduated from the university.
Finally, in 1922, the school was granted full university status after incorporating the College as the "University of the Witwatersrand".
The university underwent a significant expansion programme in 1984, acquiring the Milner Park Showgrounds and renaming it the West Campus.

 South Africa: Student protests erupt at Witwatersrand University, Johannesburg
While South Africa is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the end of the Apartheid regime, students at Wits University in Johannesburg are protesting against cuts in university funding and cuts in student bursaries.
The initial reaction of the management of Wits University was to condemn the protests and to consider calling in the police and bouncers from night clubs in order to maintain what they called “law and order”.
Wits University, which is reported to have R7 billions in investments in stocks and bonds, claims that government cut backs have forced them to cut down the student financial aid budget by R80 million.

He received Postdoctoral training from Witwatersrand University Medical, earning an M.D. degree in 1954, and was admitted as a member of the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh) in 1953, and as a member of the Royal College of Physicians (London) in 1953, to both of which he was later elected Fellows.
He first came to the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1959 where he was Associate Professor of Medicine until 1964.
Although Dr. Hirschowitz's many accomplishments in the field of the healing arts have been recognized and are impressive, one of the latest and among the most prestigious was that of being named in 1990 as Honorary Fellow, the Royal Science of Medicine.

One of the most fascinating exhibitions to be held in a South African gallery in recent years, titled Clothing and Identity, the exhibition opened on Wednesday 25th February at the Wits' Gertrude Posel Gallery, and ran for two years.
It formed part of the new permanent display of African art from the University's holdings as well as Standard Bank's and was assembled by seven different curators.
While clothing may well be universal, says Rayda Bekker, the Posel's chief curator, its significance is not always obvious to those outside a particular culture.

The friendships formed on this campus, and the earnest discussions which were held, among students of diverse origins and ideologies, have had a tremendous impact on the development of a united and a humane liberation movement in this country.
I would like to take this occasion to pay tribute to the university - and to express the hope that it will soon become a truly national university - not merely a liberal white institution admitting some fl students and upholding some cherished values.
