 THE UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES IN THE VISAYAS
On May 31, 1979, the Board of Regents approved the establishment of the University of the Philippines in the Visayas as an autonomous unit of the University of the Philippines System with its main campus in Miagao, Iloilo.
On February 29, 1980, the groundbreaking of the UPV site in Miagao was held, an event marking the beginning of UPV's bid to develop itself into the lead educational institution in Region VI, and especially as an outstanding institution of higher learning in fisheries and marine and related sciences.
The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) of the University of the Philippines in the Visayas is the forefront of fisheries education in the country.

The President of the university shall act as the presiding officer of the UPSA while the Chairperson of the Commission on Higher education shall serve as the alternate presiding officer incase of absence of, permanent incapacity or disqualification of the presiding officer.
Faculty, REPS and administrative personnel elected to the UPSA must be in active service in the university and shall have served the University for at least five (5) years prior to his or her election.

From a low overall ranking of 32 among Asia’s top 50 universities to being biased against the poor, the University of the Philippines (UP) seems to catching it from all sides these days.
One is to increase the income of the university through additional state resources or other fund-raising activities, and the other is to make operations more efficient.
The CPBO also cautioned that this trend could be true not only of UP, but also of all state universities and colleges (SUCs), considering that many school children, even those in the elementary and high school levels, are forced to drop out in the middle of the school year.
