Unix Amiga Emulator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
UAE was originally called the Unusable Amiga Emulator, due to it not even being able to boot, but that name has since become obsolete.
Some considered UAE to be attempting the impossible; to be demanding that a system read, process and output 100 MB/s of data when the fastest PC was a 66 MHz 486, while keeping various emulated chips (the Amiga chipset) all in sync and appearing as they were supposed to appear to software.
UAE provides a "video card" for the Amiga side of emulation which is tailored for display on the PC hardware, rather than have to go through the complex emulation of Amiga's video hardware.

UAE is considered by many a milestone in computer emulation, because it was possibly the first program that attempted to emulate an architecture that relies on complex coprocessors for many tasks.
The realization that an useful Amiga emulator could be written contributed to an enthusiasm about emulation, which started or speeded efforts to write emulators of the most various, obscure and complicated architectures.
Also worth of mention is another Amiga emulator, Fellow, which was released not too long after the first usable versions of UAE, and generated competition beneficial to both projects.

With a good emulator, you use those old computer programs and even get to some of that data that you haven't been able to port to your PC for one reason or another.
Emulators typically need ROM images which are copies of code normally stored on a ROM/EPROM chip in the computer or game cartridge or other medium used to store needed information for the system or game to work properly.
While it is perfectly legal to have the emulator programs in accordance with the author's licensing agreement, you most either own the system/cartridge or have express written permission to have a copy of their ROM files.

The .ADF (Amiga Disk File) format FAQ
Since the Amiga is a 680x0 based computer, integers that require more than one byte are stored on disk in 'Motorola order' : the most significant byte comes first, then the less significant bytes in descending order of significance (MSB LSB for two-byte integers, B3 B2 B1 B0 for four-byte integers).
There's also the Amiga Floppy Reader Project at http://metamonk.com/afr/ a project describing a small piece of hardware to connect to the parallel port of a standard PC, enabling it to read Amiga disks.
The Amiga does a full track read starting at a random position on the track and going for slightly more than a full track read to assure that all data gets into the buffer.
