Amazon.co.uk: Unknown Pleasures: Music: Joy Division
Listening to Unknown Pleasures isn't a depressing or oppressive experience (despite what other people might say.) Intense and dark, yes, and I'd admit to Ian Curtis' lyrics being on the dreary side, but Joy Division knew how to write songs, and the sheer melody of tracks like She's Lost Control and Disorder are positively up-lifting.

Unknown Pleasures was released one month after it was recorded, and quickly sold roughly 5,000 copies.
The wall of guitar that enters exactly halfway through the song-- which in many ways plays as a fuck-you to the band's dissatisfaction with Hannett's guitar work on Unknown Pleasures-- is to this day without parallel in its simultaneous beauty, distance and terrifying volume.

Unknown Pleasures remarks at the start of the film, “Art sets the stage; let the economy perform on it,” but evidence in the movie shows that his assessment is dead wrong.
While the capitalist culture that dominates Unknown Pleasures seems a bit more exciting than what surrounds it, at the same time it’s made clear that those pleasures all lie on the surface level and are quite disposable.
Though it’s tough to accept such a thoroughly negative appraisal of a country’s state of affairs, Unknown Pleasures certainly makes a strong case for one (though in all fairness he still finds plenty to laugh at), and in doing so holds up a mirror to the rest of the world.

Unknown Pleasures is the third and most recent feature from filmmaker Jia Zhangke.
Like his previous films, Xiao Wu (1997) and Platform (2000), Unknown Pleasures was made without the permission of the Chinese government and, therefore, cannot be shown in the director's homeland.
Unknown Pleasures was shot on digital video, and if the screen shots below are any indication, it looks like Jia captures some of that alienation even in his compositions, positioning people on opposite edges of the frame and dwarfing individuals against a massive landscape.

If that were all Unknown Pleasures was, it wouldn't be discussed so much, but the ten songs inside, quite simply, are stone-cold landmarks, the whole album a monument to passion, energy, and cathartic despair.
The quantum leap from the earliest thrashy singles to Unknown Pleasures can be heard through every note, with Martin Hannett's deservedly famous production -- emphasizing space in the most revelatory way since the dawn of dub -- as much a hallmark as the music itself.

The utter equivalence of form and content is perhaps the chief beauty of Jia Zhang Ke's Unknown Pleasures.
At first and for quite a stretch, the movie seems little more than a hodgepodge of loosely associated scenes that keep on the same flat emotional plane and refuse to build up narrative momentum.
Unknown Pleasures shows the tide of individualism in full swell a decade later, and again finds the precise aesthetic means to gauge the distance travelled.

They reconvened with producer Martin Hannett in April 1979, and recorded Unknown Pleasures in less than a week.
The band, relative novices in the studio, were treated as a blank canvas by Hannett, whose production swathed the instruments in his trademark harsh metallic reverb and augmented Steven Morris' metronomic rhythms with drum machines.
With Unknown Pleasures they created a template that would spawn hordes of angst ridden, fl clad doom merchants in long overcoats, but few of its imitators matched its disturbing power, which still sounds defiantly strange and vaguely unsettling today.

Although Hendrix had become a star in the U.K., he was largely unknown in his home country when he played this show.
So, the set was well chosen to introduce him to an American audience, even if that audience reacted in understandable amazement encountering a style of guitar playing hitherto unimagined and a flamboyant performance that culminated in a guitar doused in lighter fluid and going up in flames.
