Topic: Unleashed (band)

In the News (Wed 23 Dec 09)

  Northern Metal: [Band details for:Unleashed]
Unleashed was formed when vocalist/bassist Johnny Hedlund left his former band Nihilist.
Unleashed also gained a dedicated following from their strong live performances, in which between songs Hedlund sips mead from a drinking horn before dedicating one of their viking inspired songs to his forefathers and then pours some of the leftover drink into the audience.
In 2002 the band returned from a five year hiatus with the album "Hell's Unleashed", which was just as heavy and unrelentless as their earlier works.

First sign that Unleashed is still out of fresh ideas, despite a five-year absence, came via the announcement that the album will bear the Hell's Unleashed title.
My last memories of Unleashed are from the band's tour with Broken Hope and Demented Ted circa 1994 where the front row was mobbed by a gang of sieg-heiling White Supremacists.
In fact, the band itself has long realized that its puddle of creativity has run dry and tries to compensate and maintain some kind of a relevance by invoking insincere concepts like battle, Vikings and lore to sell albums.

Deemed as Unleashed's comeback album, the band's new material is bigger sounding and more harsh.
The album took twice as long to mix any of Unleashed previous albums and during the process the band added new elements to the sound, which give the material a "sick and horror-like" atmosphere.
Unleashed's new full-length is expected to drop sometime in early 2002 on Century Media Records.

With these accolades, it's no secret where the band is headed musically: straight to the top of a long list of artists who dared to expand their musical horizons outside of the movement that originally embraced them.
It's a daring move, yet the core audience that helped define them over the past six years of their existence is embracing it in full force.

The two tracks from the band's 1973 single, "Tyhjyyteen syvyyteen" ("Into the Void, into the Deep") and "Sanomaton kirkkaus" ("Unspeakable Brightness"), are notable for being vocal-based and organ-heavy art rock clearly influenced by early Wigwam, rather different from the fusion approach the band adopted on their albums.
One wonders how this band scraped up the cash to afford the big orchestra which plays on most of the album for their first release, but the fact that they never made anything else should be a hint.

The band was formed in the late 80's and early 90's by me. I was hoping to put a band together that would challenge the boundaries of metal music.
U.P. Unleashed Power was unknowingly birthed in the late eighties when the Danish band, Avalon, recorded an LP called "Unleashed Power." Guitarist, Ken Jacobsen and vocalist, John Mathias were the corner stones of Avalon, which dissolved in 1989 when Jacobsen and Ed Owen (Drums) joined together as Unleashed Power and relocated to New York.

 Unleashed - Viking Death Metal
Review: In the hands of Unleashed the heavy-handed antiprog rock of Venom becomes an exercise in the rhythms and textures of the battlefield in musical form, meaning that simple and direct death metal makes here an engaging and thunderous art form that is often enlightening in its demonstration of the persistence of simplicity.
Review: With their third album, Unleashed do not alter their rising course and thus justify some further criticism that all of their work is all cut from the same cloth which has arisen after the first two very similar albums.
The Viking viral hierarchy that pervades the concepts behind these songs reflects a thoughtful futurism in the strength of humans and nature working against one another, together, in a karmic cycle which is represented in the pulsing undulation between central and harmonic notes.

When most people leave to start their own band and write the material, it's common to see that as the main songwriter that person also becomes the vocalist.
Unleashed was the only, or at least to my knowledge, the only Swedish Death Metal band in Sweden that didn't run away half naked and scared shitless when the right wing movement tried to steal our ancient symbols for their purposes back in the early 90s.

Debase's relentless riffing helps the band stand out, especially on tracks like the merciless "Schizofrenia," yet the subject matter and lyrics border on generic metal a bit too often for this band to be placed higher on the continuum than Godsmack or Disturbed.
Sanctuary Records has a high-quality rock'n'roll release with Debase's "Unleashed." "Unleashed" has all the qualities that are what is right with rock'n'roll today.
Debase is a totally hip band with plenty of talent and charisma and "Unleashed" is a killer CD.

Unleashed may have never received full credit for their hand in the development of Swedish Death Metal, but they have remained one of its main influences and forefathers.
However, the difference between Entombed and Unleashed is that the latter are still hammering out the sound they helped create.
Just a few notes in and the “ahhh…” from Johnny leaves no doubt as to who this is. Fredrick and Tomas’ chugging riffs are all over the place, and “The Longships are Coming” not only proves to be one of the album’s best songs, but also one of the better grooves since early Cannibal Corpse.

Tartarean Desire - Unleashed - Death metal band from Sweden
When Unleashed released their first album Where No Life Dwells in June of 1991, no one dreamed that they would go on to become one of the most consistent names in the underworld of death metal.
The band feels that anything less would be a disservice to their fans...it's the same approach shared by bands like Slayer and AC/DC, bands that have succeeded doing what they do well and a refusal to dilute it.
Another proud tradition of Unleashed is their dedication to their Nordic heritage, something which Johnny has kept alive in lyrical tales such as "The Defender" and "Precious Land", each of which seek to keep the strength and honor of the Viking bloodline intact.
