Topic: Unleashed (film)

  Unleashed
Unleashed, originally titled ‘Danny the Dog’, considers the bleak existence of Danny (Jet Li) a man raised since childhood as a dog, a literal slave to his master Uncle Bart (Bob Hoskins).
First was the structure of the film, set in three acts the audience is initially introduced to Danny, then there is his reintroduction to humanity concluding with him facing Bart and his past.
This is particularly important in a film such as this where the middle of the piece demands emotional connection and a lot of exposition.

 Unleashed
Complicating Unleashed is its vision of a world in which white men are rich and corrupt, women (especially artists) are doomed to a life of prostitution, and a Chinese guy fitted with a dog collar shuffling meekly behind a white person is a sight that causes no head to turn.
The film's only other female characters, a pair of hookers Bart takes back to his lair, both--troublingly--interrupt their congress when surprised by the sight of Danny.
Miyagi in one lean package, equipped with a collar and led around like an animal for the bemusement, as he always is, of masters who would see him triumph against all comers in staged matches whilst offering no challenge to their virility outside the ring.

 Film Review: Unleashed
The excitement felt in the opening fight is superseded by the realisation that Unleashed has an intriguing premise, one that raises interesting questions about the relationship between master and servant.
Of course, as he tries to rebuild his life and move on, his past is never far behind and even without the collar, he remains chained by emotional forces to the man who raised him.
Like Besson's Leon, Unleashed is unusually powerful, due to Besson's ability to interweave shockingly brutal violence with intimate human storylines and if you can suspend disbelief far enough, you will be rewarded by the emotional crescendo that such a heightened reality can achieve when it reaches its logical conclusion.

DVDActive - Reviews - Video Discs - Unleashed: Unrated (US - DVD R1)
The film is further aided by an outstanding supporting cast, and given the fact that it isn’t every day you see either Morgan Freeman or Bob Hoskins in an action film of this type, its plain to see that they must have seen something more in the film as well.
Unleashed may not be the best film I have seen all year, but it is definitely a fun movie that knows what it wants to achieve and at a little over one hundred minutes doesn’t overstay its welcome.
Universal’s treatment of the film on DVD is a solid effort overall with very good video and excellent audio, but hampered a bit by the amount and quality of the special features added to the package.

Mixed Reviews - Unleashed (2005) - reviewed by Jill Cozzi   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
UNLEASHED has the crisp crust of an action film, complete with a scenery-chewing villain in Bob Hoskins, who adds just the right touch of humor to his horrifically nasty character.
Conlan is an unconventional casting choice for the daughter role, for instead of being the kind of sultry vixen one would expect in a film like this, she's actually quite dorky-looking, with braces, an awful hairstyle, and the kind of innocent demeanor that seems to no longer exist in girls past the age of nine.
I'm not sure how well this film will keep its opening weekend audience, because it's being marketed as a Jet Li action vehicle, but it is really a redemption story, one about the power of family, of memory, of art and culture, and of love.

The publicity for this film claimed that Jet Li's fight scenes were "so intense that test audiences were leaping out of their seats".
A lot of audiences have been puzzled and critical that everyone in the film is either American, or English, but if you've ever heard a Glaswegian accent you'll understand why the filmmakers were keen to avoid it.
In no way is this a bad film, just a bit tame from what we have come to expect from Besson and co.

 Unleashed (2005): Reviews
The simple, unpretentious storytelling of Unleashed is a rarity in the glut of underwritten and overproduced action films that dominate American screens today.
Unleashed suffers from a surfeit of sentimentality at times (blame Besson for that), but it's Li's first major Western role of any depth and he acquits himself admirably as both mad dog and melancholy master.
Unleashed serves two masters, each one disappointingly: It's a brutal series of over-amped fights, and it's a touching story of human nature at war with itself.

Hoskins, in full-out Cockney splendor, is nicknamed, at least in terms of his leashed “nephew” Danny (played by Li), Uncle Bart, a man who has bred Danny like a dog (you’ll be hearing this dog metaphor a lot, trust me) and trained him to kill naughty blokes who don’t pay their debts.
Hoskins and his gangster cronies seem to think that their characters will be endearing just by virtue of talking about how much they’d “love a pint” after suffering savage beatings, and wrongly assume their remorselessness will seem cute because they all appear to be having a “bloody good time”.
Of course, when an idea as silly as the plot of Unleashed is protracted into a full-length feature, we can’t help but wonder whether a short film would have been a band-aid, or whether the better solution would have just been no film at all.

It takes little to top "The One," but Li's "Unleashed" is the most interesting English-language film he has made yet -- an action picture with the emotional simplicity of a bedtime story, painted in the grimy colors of the London underworld.
The film's bleak tone and the plot's quiet stretches might not endear it to every action-movie fan, but Li holds nothing back when the time for fighting does come.
Fight scenes are rousing whether Li is set against a handful of villains -- where he must leap, bounce and slide to evade their blows -- or in a one-on-one match in a tiny toilet stall that rivals the trailer house in "Kill Bill" as a challengingly claustrophobic arena.

“Unleashed” tells the story of Danny (Jet Li), a regressed Chinese immigrant who since he was a small boy has been raised by a vicious mobster named Bart (Bob Hoskins).
The little acting that he does in the film does show Li has a tender side and does have potential to be more than the action “pit bull” he is perceived here.
Morgan Freeman brings a lot of humanity to the film with his blind man but for the most part his role is just a throwaway as the film focuses more on the struggle for humanity than humanity itself.

 Movie Review for Unleashed
Unleashed’s story is almost exactly what you’d expect from Luc Besson (The Fifth Element, Leon the Professional), a screenwriter who tends to use the reoccurring theme of identity in his scripts.
It’s an interesting debate carried throughout the film, although as a theme it tends to get a little heavy handed, practically smacking the audience with one of Danny’s fists to make sure they get the idea that when surrounded by different families Danny is a different person.
Instead think of Unleashed as a modern day Frankenstein, only this monster isn’t assembled piece by piece, he is still created by a madman, and then taught to truly be human through the compassion of a blind man...

In a time when the average martial-arts movie is a shallow film with just enough plot to justify the plentiful butt-kicking, Unleashed is a long-needed and satisfying break from tradition.
Unleashed is the story of how one who knows nothing but fighting and killing can learn to change himself and the way he lives.
Unleashed stands out from its genre as a martial arts film that focuses on the characters and the story, rather than just stringing together a series of impressive fighting sequences.

And so the film lays out his dilemma -- will he be the loving son he has learned to be with Sam (or, as Sam has it, has always been, despite the body count on his resume) or will he be the vengeful son trained by Bart?

Film Review: Unleashed by Brian Orndorf, Reader Weekly, Issue 319, May 19, 2005
It doesn’t take a sharp eye to realize that Li and Besson are after a different type of action film with “Unleashed.” The picture is grounded in character, not set pieces or mystery, which allows a rare opportunity for the audience to become fully invested in the characters.
“Unleashed” has incredible moments of operatic, absurdist violence, but the film is never buried by it, and retains its core as a softer kaleidoscope of ass-kickery.
If “Unleashed” wasn’t already a unique enough Jet Li feature film, the inclusion of these fine actors leaves no doubt about what type of experience Besson and Li were going after.

UNLEASHED is one of the few examples of how martial arts and bona fide drama can be mutually supportive in creating a film that is at once thrillingly athletic and gently tender.
Danny unleashed is simply a Pavlovian animal and when the collar is replaced, he becomes docile with the sad eyes of a puppy.
The action is superbly captured by cinematographer Pierre Morel with the aura of darkness in Danny's caged life serving as a perfect foil to the martial arts sequences. In short, this is a fine little film about characters worth knowing and provides audiences with both action and drama of a very high level of achievement.

However, the werewolf who needs to be worried about being unleashed in this film is Ginger's younger sister, Brigitte (Emily Perkins, who you may remember as the young Beverly Marsh in the television version of Stephen King's "It"), who had made her sister's curse her own in a tragic effort at sibling solidarity.
The film lacks the power of Ginger Snaps, with its sudden about face from sarcastic comedy to tragic horror, but it is still a striking effort at reinventing the horror genre as something genuinely horrible.
