Alice in Chains supported the album by opening for Van Halen, Poison, and Iggy Pop, and it became a hit, going gold by the end of the year.
Alice in Chains soldiered on in the face of such criticism, performing successfully on the third Lollapalooza tour in 1993, which helped Dirt reach sales of three million.
But just two months before the album's release, in April 2002, the news that every Alice in Chains fan had been fearing for years had finally come to pass: Layne Staley was found dead due to a lethal overdose of cocaine and heroin.

The Perfect Album: Alice In Chains Dirt - Music
A perfect album is timeless it moves you and engrains itself in your life and becomes a touchstone for personal histories.
Alice In Chains explored the darker side of life, led by Jerry Cantrell's songwriting and guitar playing and infused by lead singer Layne Staley's abuse of Heroin, which would eventually take his life, Dirt is as close as the Grunge movement came to a masterpiece.
After this album the band went on to create two Ep's, a self titled studio album and the immortal live MTV Unplugged, but none of these capture the heavy, edgy sound of Dirt a truly perfect album.

That leaves Alice in Chains, predestined by its torpid unoriginality to contentedly embody dumb-rock as if the '70s were still in full swing.
Alice in Chains starts with a typical roar ("Grind") but immediately downshifts into the charged atmospherics and controlled feedback symphony of "Brush Away" and continues switching between bellowing force and various restrained alternatives.
Unplugged offers one new song, the competent brooder “Killer Is Me.” Less than three months later, Alice in Chains would play its final show.

Again, the band chose not to tour, which launched yet another round of speculation that band was suffering from various addictions and were on the verge of disbanding.
The group did give one concert -- their first in three years -- in 1996, performing for an episode of MTV Unplugged, which was released as an album that summer.

Alice in Chains were initially tagged with the "grunge" moniker, when in fact their haunting, ponderous sound was far closer to the progressive rock of Queensryche.
Their second album, Dirt, is a moody, portentous affair, filled with occasionally inspired riffing from guitarist Jerry Cantrell and hair-tossed wailing from singer Layne Staley.
Jerry Cantrell proved on this album that he is one of the most talented rock songwriters and guitarists around and it also cemented AIC as one of the best rock bands around.

This album is full of classic songs that to this day continue to get a good amount of airplay on various radio stations.
If you were to ask most people on the street what genre Alice In Chains were part of, they'd probably respond by saying "grunge." While Alice In Chains could be described as grunge; with their Sabbath-like sludgy guitars and growling vocals, they could just as accurately be labeled hard-rock or metal.
Facelift was the start to alice in chains with their more hair metal start over their grungey end(Tripod).

 Barnes & Noble.com Music - Dirt -- Alice in Chains - CD
Dirt is Alice in Chains' major artistic statement and the closest they ever came to recording a flat-out masterpiece.
The album holds out little hope for its protagonists (aside from the much-needed survival story of "Rooster," a tribute to Cantrell's Vietnam-vet father), but in the end, it's redeemed by the honesty of its self-revelation and the sharp focus of its music.
One of the most important, essential albums of all time, Alice in Chains' "Dirt" is a bleak, but beautiful album, making clear that drugs have been a terrible and painful experience.

 Alice In Chains
The funny thing is, Alice In Chains were from Seattle, but they were hardly an essential part of the punk-influenced "grunge" scene, bent on overthrowing the cheesy influences of late Eighties metal and replacing them with, in the end, almost equally cheesy influences of pop hooks mixed with "original" Seventies' metal and Eighties' underground attitude.
Which basically meant that Alice In Chains preferred to follow in the footsteps of Metallica rather than Poison, but added a tremendous overdose of emotional power which was a perfect compensation for the lack of Metallica-like technical skills.
Unplugged shows are usually detested by "selective" audiences, and occasionally for good reason - but for all of their crassness, this particular show doesn't exactly strike me as a purely commercial, publicity-dedicated event.

Alice in Chains : Unplugged - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Between the end of 1993 and a performance for MTV Unplugged in the spring of 1996, Alice in Chains performed no concerts -- they didn't even support the release of their eponymous third album with a minor tour.
There's a variety of reasons for their inactivity -- primarily it's due to the health of certain members -- but the lack of concerts made the Unplugged performance seem special.
Again, it's a case of an Unplugged album that is designed to attract the band's core audience, which makes it a fairly entertaining effort that is essentially just an official bootleg.

Alice in Chains' debut album, mostly written by Jerry Cantrell and well written it is. Jerry Cantrell and Mike Starr add a crunching metal aspect to the wailing vocals of lead singer Layne Staley for an amazing sound.

Alice in Chains defined the sound of grunge/metal with this CD and their EP before it "We Die Young," but maintained such an excellent degree of quality that I hate to put this in the same genre as the flat voiced Nirvana of yore.

I’m sure I first got exposed to them with the “As Nasty As They Wanna Be” album [which I cover in the book], but in the years since I’ve dug a lot deeper, into their earlier stuff.
Their first album was important because: (1) they were white, and white kids who didn’t like hip-hop were all of a sudden like “hey, rap music is pretty good, it even has guitars and everything.” And we all know what “crossover success” means to a group, and in this case, a whole genre.
They went through many changes and haven't released a single studio album since, although there are some stories floating out there about a new song making the rounds.

Autopsy reports have confirmed that Alice In Chains singer Layne Staley died from a drug overdose.
E-Online reports that Staley died from a fatal mix of cocaine and heroin, better known as speedball or "Belushi" (named after John Belushi who died of the concoction in 1982).
With the grim, jarring single, Cut You In, leading the charge to modern rock radio, Boggy Depot is unmistakably Alice in tone, and reveals Cantrell's creative influence on that band.
