Unreal Engine 3 is a complete game development framework for next-generation consoles and DirectX9-equipped PCs, providing the vast array of core technologies, content creation tools, and support infrastructure required by top game developers.
Unreal Engine gameplay network programming is high-level and data-driven, allowing UnrealScript game code to specify variables and functions to be replicated between client and server to maintain a consistent approximation of game state.
Unreal Engine 3 was used to power games such as Epic’s recently released Gears of War and the upcoming Unreal Tournament 3, as well as many games by licensees that represent some of the best studios in the industry.

After all, the Unreal Engine has always been a standard-bearer when it comes to 3D graphics engines, and every year the new technology demos have consistently blown us away.
This year Epic unveiled what the company is calling "Unreal Engine 3.0" to the game development community, and the tradition of excellence continues.
Unreal Engine 3.0 naturally has built-in physics to handle stuff like ragdoll bodies flopping around after you shoot them, or objects with their own weight and mass that can interact with each other or roll down slopes.

Furthermore, the Unreal engine's maps are not plagued with long BSP tree computational times, nor lightmap and visibility rendering times, as are other 3D game engines, such as id Software's Quake2 engine.
Given the inherent real-time, multi-user nature of the Unreal engine, and the inexpensiveness to optimize a system for running it, being able to tour a virtual building in real-time with colleagues should be a commonplace occurrence, not an impossibility.
The rapid-development nature of Unreal allows viewers to "leave" the building and be transferred to a "waiting room" while architects make adjustments to the model, then transfer the viewers back in within minutes, not hours or days, allowing true real-time collaboration and creative conceptualization.

 bit-tech.net | Unreal Engine 4 in development
Unreal Engine 3 dominates the next-gen market for 3D game engine licensing: Sony have signed it for for inclusion in the PlayStation 3 SDK; Microsoft have also licensed it to produce games for Xbox 360.
Once you see the detailed screenshots and video footage of Unreal Engine 3 running on either next-generation console in all its glory, it is hard not to be in total awe of what Epic have achieved.
Consider then that Unreal Engine 4 will follow it and you might be forgiven if you struggle to find any areas of version 3 that require improvement.

This year, one of the features in the new Unreal Engine is a facial animation system that dynamically reads in voice acting clips and lip-syncs a character's face and facial expressions.
If a guy is running with his gun and he's shot in the arm, the animation responds accordingly, with the model dynamically reacting to the shot and trying to return to his regular animation.

When Unreal was finally released, Microsoft's Direct3D API was growing almost exponentially in popularity and Epic was fairly quick to develop a renderer for their game engine.

Unreal Engine 3 provides full support for three shadow techniques: *Dynamic stencil buffered shadow volumes supporting fully dynamic, moving light sources casting accurate shadows on all objects in the scene.
Ever Next-Gen game should be using this engine, because I hear what they have been doing is buying other game engines and incorperating it into their own (smart idea) so its probably the engine on top of the world right now...
Also, the engine may be nice, but what a *good* game needs isnt a 750000$ engine, it needs good ideas and gameplay and thats something you cann't buy from the shelfts.

Their new engine brings an advanced dynamic shadowing, which enables high-quality shadow renders with characters that cast dynamic soft shadows and shadows that follow the torch moves.
What's most interesting about this aspect of the engine is the fact that characters will animate according to their health status, mood and fatigue, and their bodies will accordingly interact with other characters and objects in their vicinity, following all the changes around them.

The other problem, and I think the most dangerous, is that the Unreal engine has problems managing numbers with a negative sign (read point B and E in Bugs section for details about) and this problem result in resources consumption and code execution.
ALL the releases of the engine are vulnerable to the bugs I have found because the network protocol and part of the core have not been modified at all from the far first release of the engine.
Incredibly the Unreal engine not only lacks a true handshake but the challenge key (the key created for each match and avoid abuses) is not considered by the server, so the attacker can use the same key or use a randomly generated key.

What this preview covers is the Unreal Engine 3, which represents the largest single change to Epic's flagship game engine since they started licensing it out years and years ago.
Now, developers can buy an engine and have a much larger chunk of basic code ready to go; this lets them concentrate on the things that make their game unique rather than worrying about making sure that what's under the hood is running smoothly.
Since the Unreal Engine 3 will be almost surely be fully compatible with the Xbox 360 and PS3, developers can quickly do cross-platform work and switch from one platform to another without a huge learning curve.

Although he was clear to say that he has not seen the final hardware for the Revolution, Rein said the existing Unreal Engine 2 would provide more than enough muscle to take full advantage of the Revolution's hardware since it won't require HD resolution.
He elaborated that licensing Unreal Engine 3 for a Revolution game would probably be overkill, since Unreal Engine 2 is already capable of maxing out what they perceive the system to be capable of.
Engines like UE3 are supposed to be completely scalable, so it doesn't make any sense that it wouldn't be able to run on a Revolution, when I bet I could probably run a game on my 3 year old PC, and not in hi-def.
