Unseen character - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Television shows and stage plays sometimes include continuing characterscharacters who are currently in frequent interaction with the other characters and who influence current story events — who are never seen or heard by the audience and only described by other characters.
The earliest example of an unseen and unheard television character was Gladys Potter on the 1950s TV series December Bride; regular character Pete Potter, played by Harry Morgan, constantly complained about his wife Gladys, but she was never seen on that show.
The best-known unseen character in British television was Elizabeth, the wife of Captain Mainwaring, the main character in Dad's Army.

Characters on the command deck may be able to triangulate the exact location of the outgoing signal with a Computer roll, DC 10.
The character piloting has the most to do during the next portion of the story, though other characters have their hands full as well, such as returning fire at their pursuers.
If, on the other hand, the characters are not able to shake their pursuers, and they instead are cornered or trapped, they will quickly be surrounded by the surviving members of all three factions, and, perhaps, a few eager natives.

 The Eugene O'Neill Review
However, the unseen character is so recurrent in his works, from the first sketches to the final masterpieces, that a researcher must conclude that this technique served the playwright’s major concerns in an important, even indispensable way.
The dominant unseen figures in The Three Sisters are the sinister Protopopov and the dead father of the Prozorovs; in Desire, the major unseen figures are Maw and Min.
Unseen characters, because they are evoked by minimal means—mostly through the words of onstage characters—engage the audience in the active imagining that is at the heart of theatre.

Stomp Tokyo Video Reviews - Unseen Evil (1999)
Unseen Evil is a good example of its type, but we're not convinced that the type still needs to be made.
We think that the propensity of horror movie characters to argue is the influence of George Romero's classic Night of the Living Dead, but Romero's characters didn't lose their civility until they were faced with an unstoppable assault by zombies.
The movie is held together by its cast of unknowns, who grimace and shout and point their guns menacingly at one another as they alternately battle the Occasionally-Seen Evil and protect their own stake in the loot.

 A Dissertation on Tennessee Williams
He acknowledges that the connection between his life and the lives of his outcast characters is more one of the circumstances, the acts involving his characters, than of physical or exact psychological makeup.
The characters need not be completely honest mirrors of Williams's experiences; they may portray a single facet of his personality or suffer through one experience similar to Williams's.
Through the playwright's imagination and his art--his creation of these fugitive outcast characters and his placement of them in dramatic juxtaposition with conventional morality--we come upon a single common denominator: the playwright, like his outcast characters, feels, because of the situations that made him outcast, that something is missing in his life.

Characters from Irish soap operas and The Simpsons have been used in ESRC-funded research into how we get to learn people's faces.
They found that for unfamiliar faces, memory appears dominated by the 'external' features, but where the face is well-known it is 'internal' features such as the eyes, nose and mouth, that are more important.
In studies using faces claimed to belong to characters playing in The Archers and the Simpsons, learning new faces was found to be easier.
