To the south of the city of Halle, in the most northerly wine-growing region in Europe, vines can flourish only in carefully selected sites along the Saale and Unstrut rivers, which provide a soil structure of decomposed shell limestone.
The only exceptions are a few vineyards at the Süssen See lake, which is even further north, between Halle and Eisleben, the Werderaner Wachtelberg, which is the most northerly registered vineyard in Germany, as well as the Hanke wine estate with around 10 hectares of vineyards in Saxony.
