Cricinfo - Whither English cricket? (1 May 1999)
Club cricket is an imperfect nursery for the professional game, and those youngsters who do come through swiftly become enmeshed in a structure that cultivates tenured mediocrity.
At Milnrow, a club on the outskirts of Rochdale, two miles from the Yorkshire border, the game against Unsworth was swiftly abandoned so that everybody could get to the bar and tell tales of the deeds they would have performed.
English cricketers are constantly told they are too soft, that players pick up wages for aspiring only to mediocrity, and when Leicestershire supply unanswerable evidence that one club at least are fighting the good fight, they are greeted with public indifference.

Cricket: Home is away for Unsworth players - This Is Lancashire
UNSWORTH Cricket Club might not be able to play a single match this year at their new ground which was meant to be ready two months ago.
It is frustrating for the club, who were looking forward to an exciting new era after selling their former ground on Parr Lane to a housing company.
However, the likliest scenario is no cricket in Unsworth at all this summer which is a shame, especially as the team are having an excellent season with last weekend's superb eight wicket victory one of several wins.

Unsworth took 108 wickets in his previous two seasons with Ormskirk, 61 of them at 8.50 runs apiece in 2001 before he left to join Northern.
Unsworth's overall Premier League record for Ormskirk was 583.3 overs, 232 maidens, 108 wickets at 9.77 apiece with a best return of 7-27 against Wigan in 2001.
The arrival of Unsworth, essentially a bowler who can bat in the lower middle order, means that chairman of cricket, Mike Taylor, will shortly depart for Australia targeting an overseas man who is primarily a batsman but who can also supplement the change attack.
