Unter den Linden (Under the Lindens – named for its Linden or lime trees which line the grassed pedestrian mall between the two carriageways) is one of Berlin's splendid boulevards.
A boulevard of linden trees was planted from 1647 extending from the electoral palace to the gates of the city by Friedrich Wilhelm, "The Great Elector", who wanted to ride from his castle to his hunting park the Tiergarten with more appropriately Baroque splendor.

Berlin State Opera (in German: Staatsoper Unter den Linden) is a prominent German opera company.
Its permanent home is the Opera House on the Unter den Linden boulevard in Berlin.
After the collapse of the German Empire in 1918, the Opera was renamed "Staatsoper unter den Linden" and the "Königliche Kapelle" became "Kapelle der Staatsoper".

Of course, as Unter Den Linden was part of East Berlin when the city was divided, it was not assessible to West Berliners.

On my first visit I was convinced that it had a special smell as well.
My Berlin friends told me that it was the blooming lindens, those same trees that once lined (and do again, just recently) its most famous street.
On subsequent visits I have noticed the smell of lindens less, the pungent atmosphere of the city itself more.
