 SparkNotes: Siddhartha: Context
A work that featured some unquestionably autobiographical content, Hesse’s debut novel told the tale of an idealistic and driven youth who leaves his home in a Swiss mountain village to become a poet.
Hesse’s follow-up novel in 1906, Unterm Rad, also contained many autobiographical elements from Hesse’s own adolescence.
Unterm Rad is the story of a schoolboy who feels completely alienated from his contemporaries and flees from his school to travel through a variety of cities.

Hesse enters the seminary at the age of fourteen.
Like Hans Giebenrath in the story Unterm Rad and Josef Knecht in Das Glasperlenspiel, he lives in the "Stube" and "Hellas" house.
As well as featuring in Unterm Rad, Maulbronn also appears as "Mariabronn" in Narziss und Goldmund, and as "Waldzell" in Das Glasperlenspiel, Hesse having used the literary genre as a vent for his experiences at the monastery seminary.

'Beneath the Wheel,' or, аs it was originally titled in Gеrmаn, 'Unterm Rad,' is a stunningly good early Hesse nоvеl, one of his best and more memorable early books (although my personal favorite of his еаrlу work is 'Rosshalde').
However I don't think "Unterm Rad" ("Beneath the Wheel", aka: "The Prodigy") is nearly as interesting as his later works.
Although I find "Peter Camenzind" mоrе interesting as a novel, "Unterm Rad" is mоrе well written and developed than "Peter Camenzind" whiсh comes across as fragmented and incomplete.

The visible dominance of nature tbroughout the work demands that H.'s hero experience fulfillment only in his ultimate return to the natural state symbolized in his final role as a farmer.
The positive, healthy state of nature is contrasted sharply with the destructive influence of civilized culture in H.'s novel Unterm Rad (1906; The Prodigy, 1957).
Unterm Rad was the first of H.'s novels to analyze the tensions between the spiritual-intellectual side of the artistic individual and the paralyzing institutions of bourgeois society.

Dezisionistisches Mitleid: Dekadenz und Satire in Hermann Hesses Unterm Rad
Hesse's second novel Unterm Rad has often been dismissed as a relatively uncomplicated satire on the current educational system which, while embodying a certain rebelliousness, ultimately endorses the status quo.
Unterm Rad is, in this reading, not seen as a set-piece satire on Wilhelmine pedagogic practice, but as presenting a sinister reality in which the protagonist himself plays a part in his own destruction.

 Hesse, Hermann Criticism and Essays
When he went away to school, he soon learned there was no curriculum for would-be poets as there was for teachers, doctors, and scientists.
His school novel Unterm Rad (Beneath the Wheel) represents Hesse's own rebellion against such a system.
It depicts the educational institution as being fatal to the human spirit that does not conform.

Though a model student, he was unable to adapt, so he was apprenticed in a Calw tower-clock factory and later in a Tubingen bookstore.
His disgust with conventional schooling was expressed in the novel Unterm Rad (1906; Beneath the Wheel), in which an overly diligent student is driven to self-destruction.
Hesse remained in the bookselling business until 1904, when he became a free-lance writer and brought out his first novel, Peter Camenzind, about a failed and dissipated writer.

A winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature:
Hesse, more than any other writer in the 20th century, had a remarkable ability to remember the anxieties, idealism and passions of youth and to express that experience in his short stories, poems and novels.
From his earliest "hit", Peter Camenzind (1904) through such other novels with special appeal to youth such as Unterm Rad, Der Steppenwolf, or Demian (originally published under the pen name, Emil Sinclair), Hesse touched ever widening circles of readers.
As he matured, his works began to include deeper and more universal existential and spiritual insights which appealed increasingly to mature and serious readers.
