My Duden Deutsches Universal-Wörterbuch defines "Tauchboot" as "ein Unterseeboot, das nur für kurze Zeit getaucht bleiben kann," i.e.
As far as I have been able to check the first U-boote used a combination of elektro- and diesel-engines, were very slow, vulnerable and could make very short trips only.
But nowhere did I find a definition of when the Tauchboote became Unterseeboote.
