Rivers belong to the Volga and the Dnieper basins.

At Tsaritsyn the great river reaches its extreme south-western limit, and is there separated from the Don by an isthmus only 45 m.
The figures given show how immensely the river varies in volume, and the greatness of the changes which are constantly going on in the channel and on its banks.

Past the town of Rzhev, the Volga turns northeastward, is swelled by the inflow of the Vazuza and Tvertsa rivers at Tver (formerly Kalinin), and then continues to flow northeastward through the Rybinsk Reservoir, into which other rivers, such as the Mologa and the Sheksna, flow.
The average temperatures in the river's upper reaches range from 19° F (?7° C) to 6° F (-14° C) and those of July from 62° F (17° C) to 68° F (20° C), while on its lower reaches at Astrakhan corresponding temperatures are 19° F (?7° C) and 77° F (25° C).

Makariy, the founder of the three monasteries, is better known under the name of "Yellow Waters," for it was on Yellow Waters Lake that he was prior of the second monastery he founded.
Makariy then settled by the Unzha River, a tributary of the Volga, where he founded his third monastery dedicated to the Holy Trinity.
It seems that icons with his image appeared long before he was officially recognized as a Saint by the church, which set his feast day as July 25th in the year of his canonization in 1619.

The 3 week visit of two U.S. scientists to Russia was conducted as a part of a one year project, funded by 1995 Special Project Program of IREX (International Research and Exchange Board).
