Great Big Sea, Sea of No Cares
Naomi de Bruyn wrote a fine career retrospective on Great Big Sea with lots of great details on their music and career up to the release of their 4th album, Turn.
Great Big Sea are Alan Doyle (vocals, guitar, bouzouki), Bob Hallett (vocals, fiddles, tenor banjo, accordion, bouzouki, mandolin, high and low whistles), Séan McCann (vocals, guitar, bodhran, shakers) and Darrell Power (vocals, bass, bones, mandola).
As for their original material, "Sea of No Cares" straddles narrative and the world of feelings as it describes a man falling in love and leaving his friends "getting cynically stoned" at the bar.

The sea shanty tradition of Newfoundland is fused with the spirit and energy of contemporary rock and popular music by Great Big Sea.
The inspiration for Great Big Sea was sparked during informal, kitchen-party jam sessions in the Newfoundland fishing village of Petty Harbor.
Releasing their first United States-distributed album, Rant and Rave, a compilation of tunes from their previous album, in 1998, Great Big Sea spent many months touring the U.S. The following year, the band released their fifth album, Turn, produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos and Tragically Hip fame.

But Great Big Sea firmly believes that Kit survives, and their version of the song is a celebration, not a dirge.
The album's title even comes from the lyrics, which are equal parts melancholy, heroic, and sweet, like all the Newfoundland music Great Big Sea loves so much.

This is a reissue of the Newfoundland based group's 1993 debut album, and the roots of the sound that's led to seven more releases which have sold millions of copies in Canada and around the world are in fine and full evidence.
Mixing original material with the Celtic traditions of their home province, along with popular selections from Canadian songwriters, Great Big Sea have worked from a rich folk heritage, but have never been content to be mired in it.
From their inception, they've applied their strong harmonies and great instrumental facility to forging something new from old materials, proving themselves to be something more than fine musicians - they're talented and dedicated artisans, and this release is a great way to either begin or complete a collection of their recorded work.

When GBS released its first album in 1993, it was dubbed the heir apparent to Figgy Duff, cranking out high-energy folk songs from land and sea.
This album is a collection of Celtic-flavored and salt-sprayed traditional songs that are so deeply ingrained in Newfoundland musical lore that they were sung by Alan Doyle, Bob Hallett and Sean McCann when they were children.
Although billed as a Great Big Sea album, The Hard and the Easy is actually a trio album and is much more sedate and folky than recent GBS offerings.

After almost thirteen years together, Great Big Sea is releasing a new kind of album, one that spans the spectrum of the Newfoundland songbook.
When preparing their latest album, according to interviews at the time, they had so much material they decided to split the album in two - one dedicated more to the new music (which, I guess, became the album "Something Beautiful") and one dedicated to all folk songs.
While I like Great Big Sea's original material (at least, some of it!), I usually prefer the traditional stuff, so I was thrilled to have a whole album of it.

With a steadily increasing reputation as an indie-pop mini-sensation in the wings, Beat Radio is sure to light up a great deal more lonely nights in the near future.
