 Upholland and the other forfeited manors were retained by the Crown until 25 February 1488—9, when they were granted to Thomas, Earl of Derby, with the lands and manors of other Yorkists.
Hugh Holme of Upholland House in 1732 married Anne daughter of Thomas Bankes of Winstanley, and her descendants ultimately succeeded to the manors and lands of the Bankes family.

The members of this prosperous family of whom, in the course of three generations, there were seven knights of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, derived no particular lustre from their ancestry.
He was son of Sir Robert Holland and his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of William De Samlesbury, and served in the wars of King Edward I in Scotland (1314 and 16).
Despite his founding a Benedictine Priory at Upholland, he is said to have been buried in the Grey Friars' Church in Preston, Lancashire, where he was also a patron.

Liverpool of course was heavily bombed during the war, but according to the older people in the area not a lot happened in Upholland, it was a fairly quiet area.
My husband told me that that he remembered going with his Grandfather to watch the bombs dropping on Liverpool and he recalled seeing fires raging high in to the sky and the noise of the guns and anti aircraft fire.
I was a little older on VE Day and Upholland celebrated along with everyone else, it was a wonderful day, the Victoria pub had a piano outside and everyone sang and danced.

In that year my father was appointed Vicar of the parish of Upholland, near Wigan, Lancashire (now part of Greater Manchester).
In accordance with the law as it then was, my mother had to give up her job upon marriage; but she was allowed to return to teaching in 1948.
We lived in Upholland until I was fifteen, when we moved to Derbyshire, my father having been appointed Rector of Walton-upon-Trent and Rural Dean of Repton.
