Action: The Upper Bern Township supervisors have told a group of concerned residents that road signs still need to be made for enforcing a recent ordinance that limits the idling time of parked trucks and tractor-trailers to 15 minutes per hour or 30 minutes in eight hours.
The Upper Bern Township supervisors have voted 3-0 to establish the Northern Sewer Service Area, a 700-acre area north of Interstate 78 that is zoned mostly commercial, industrial and agricultural-industrial.
The Upper Bern Township zoning task force has addressed the question of whether the sounds of farm activities should, or could, be regulated by the revised zoning ordinance the panel is working on.

One of the apple trees, brought from Pennsylvania by his father in 1799, and planted on the place that year, is still living—measures seven feet seven and a half inches in circumference, and rarely fails to bear a good annual crop of apples.
He was a thorough farmer, a man of excellent character and sound judgment, and assisted largely in molding the society of the township.
He has ground a great many bushels of corn in a hand mill made of two stones; the upper one revolved on the lower by means of a short handle let into the edge.

These townships existed prior to 1752 when they were a part of Philadelphia and Lancaster Counties, and were included in the new county of Berks.
On February 18, 1769, the Pennsylvania Assembly passed an act appointing three men “to settle and fix the boundary line dividing the counties of Lancaster, Cumberland and Berks, and between the counties of Berks and Northampton…” The vast additional territory to the northwest became Augusta Township, Berks County.
One of the twenty-four newer townships was a part of Chester County and was added to Berks in 1753, and the remaining twenty-three were created by subdividing some of the original twenty townships.

This appeal presents an issue of first impression to this Court, i.e., whether a zoning ordinance which requires the amortization and discontinuance of a lawful pre-existing nonconforming use is confiscatory and violative of the constitution as a taking of property without just compensation.
Following this standard, the Zoning Hearing Board herein heard evidence regarding the impact upon the property in question with respect to the nature of the present use, the period for amortization, the characteristics of the vicinage, etc., and determined that the amortization provision was reasonable as applied.
'The natural or zealous desire of many zoning boards to protect, improve and develop their community, to plan a city or a township or a community that is both practical and beautiful, and to conserve the property values as well as the "tone" of that community is commendable.

A number of Township Warrantee Maps of Berks County were platted by the state from the original warrants and surveys in the 1950s.
The townships which were not mapped by state draftsmen were Amity, Colebrookdale, District, Douglass, Earl, Hereford, Lower Alsace, Maidencreek, Maxatawny, Oley, Ontelaunee, Perry, Pike, Rockland, and Washington.
All map images shown in the atlas had to be reduced to fit the pages of the book, but the full-size images (some of which are up to 6 feet in width) are available on a companion CD.

Bern Township, where they settled, is not far from Oley, and some of the Oley Yoders had lands in Bern Township.

Michel was probably related to the Yoders of Somerset County, Pennsylvania for that is where he went after borrowing money to get his family released at the port of Baltimore.
This area is in Upper Bern Township, southwest of Hamburg at the foot of the Blue Mountains.

Upon their arrival, the three Althaus's traveled to what are now Bern, Center and Upper Bern Township.
