 | | The broad central plateau is limestone, producing undulating pasture on thin soil, with relatively few trees, dissected by incised river valleys or 'dales' of great beauty, some relatively undisturbed and of considerable natural and scientific interest. |
 | | There are 40,000 residents, but parts of the park remain quite remote and it forms an 'oasis of protected countryside, with provision for leisure use, in the heart of the industrialized north and midlands. |
 | | Conservation/visitor management areas have been provided in the Goyt Valley 1328ha, at Tideswell Dale 27.5ha and on the Tissington and High Peak Trails 108ha, as well as being actively developed at a number of localities including Dovedale, Longdendale and the Derwent Valley. |
