Total area of Pakistan and District Dir: Area of Pakistan is 796096 kilometres square due to that one percent area of Pakistan is approximately 7960 kilometres square and the total area of District Dir Upper and District Dir Lower is 5284 kilometres square which is less than a percent of total area of Pakistan.
Apart from small areas in the south-west, Dir is a rugged mountainous country with peaks rising to 5,000 metres (16,000 ft) in the north-east and to 3,000 metres (10,000 ft) along the watersheds with Swat to the east and Afghanistan to the west.

Dir district [1] is 5,280 square kilometres in area and part of the Malakand division of Pakistan's North-West Frontier Province, lying along the Afghanistan border between Chitral and Peshawar.
Apart from the tehsils of Adenzai round Chakdarra and Munda in the south-west, Dir is rugged and mountainous with peaks rising to 16,000 feet in the north-east and to 10,000 ft. along the watersheds with Swat to the east and Afghanistan to the west.
Upper Dir receives over 1,000 mm of rain annually and between 4,000 and 10.000 ft. much of it is still forested: deodar and other conifers are dominant at the higher altitudes, and deciduous species including oak, wild olive and walnut proliferate lower down.

"Except for the Dir upper district where compensation would be paid at the rate of Rs100,000 per person lost, at all other places the compensation amount would be distributed in line with the normal officially prescribed rates," said the officer.
Apart from that a total of 33 were killed in the Dir upper district.

DIR — A notorious criminal accused of dozens of arson attacks has been arrested in Pakistan’s Upper Dir area, it has been announced.
Mohammed Khan, who was wanted in a number of cases, surrendered the other day in the presence of Upper Dir Police Superintendent Noorul Huda at Sheringal.
Khan was an activist of the defunct Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat-e-Muhammadi and had established self-styled Sharia court at Doag Dara.

PESHAWAR, July 5: Police in the Upper Dir district have not been able to make a single arrest in the double murder of a known social activist and her daughter.
Among the development activists of Dir, Ms Zubeda was considered a very active member who rose to prominence during various crisis-like situations, especially when in the local government elections political parties had agreed not to allow women to contest elections and cast votes.
Some NGO workers in Upper Dir said that because Ms Zubeda was an outspoken lady she was selected as a member of the district public safety commission.

The ban was first imposed in Dir Lower, and with the government keeping mum on it, it was fast replicated in Dir Upper and Battagram and Kohistan.
The original ban announced by a Jamaat-i-Islami leader and ex-naib nazim of Lower Dir, Haji Muhammad Rasul Khan, was accepted as reflective of the mindset of the political and religious parties in the province.
He went on to say that there was no harm in allowing women to be part of the district council, but their participation at the union council level could not be allowed by the jirga.

The jirga, held in Nehag Dara in the Upper Dir district three weeks ago, not only endorsed the centuries-old custom of putting to death a woman that the family considers dishonourable, but declared that those responsible were not liable for punishment.
Crimes of honour are a pre-Islamic practice deeply rooted in the tribal societies of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) where Upper Dir is located, Balochistan province, as well as those of Sindh and Punjab where they are called "karo kari" (literally fl man and fl woman).
Last year, relatives in Dir killed Zubaida Bibi, a councillor, and her daughter because she allegedly brought a bad name upon the family.

DIR: US and Afghan troops launched a joint operation in Afghanistan’s Kunar province as Pakistan deployed paramilitary forces along the Pak-Afghan border to check the possible infiltration of fleeing Al Qaeda and Taliban elements.
A source in Dir civil administration said that paramilitary soldiers were being deployed along the border stretching from Dir Lower to Dir Upper and Chitral districts.
