Freehold's central location was also a major factor in the relocation of the county courthouse in 1714 to the area that is now the Monmouth County Hall of Records.
Meanwhile, in the township, the influx of commerce and residents united what was previously an area of scattered villages. In recent decades, both the borough and township have found new identities.
The township continues to be popular among residents and within the economic sector, although the continuing decline of farmland has led to a struggle to preserve open space and history, while limiting commerce and population.

 Engineer explains new storm-water regulations
At the March 22 Planning Board meeting, Gerken said all municipalities in New Jersey must adopt the “goals” and “objectives” sections of the state’s new storm-water management plan into their master plans by April 1.
The new regulations could also mean less curbing and smaller-width roadways in the township, Gerken said, to keep runoff to a minimum.
Under the new plan, there is a mitigation factor, but with new development, according to Gerken, there is no practical reason the standards cannot be met.

The New Jersey Education Association was the prime mover of a $300,000 ad campaign opposing a thus-far-unsuccessful effort by taxpayer groups to call a constitutional convention to fix Jersey’s tax woes.
All the union- and court-driven spending and misspending has burdened New Jersey citizens and firms with heavy taxes and led to a multi-billion-dollar redistribution of income from suburban counties to the state’s urban core—and from private to public employees.
Jersey may soon resemble its neighbor, New York City, as a place where the rich who tolerate high taxes or consider them a social obligation live side by side with the poor, but with a shrinking middle class.
