Newfoundland (French: Terre-Neuve; Irish: Talamh an Éisc; Latin: Terra Nova) is a large island off the northeast coast of North America, and the most populous part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Newfoundland is separated from the Labrador Peninsula by the Strait of Belle Isle and from Cape Breton Island by the Cabot Strait.
Newfoundland had lost about one-quarter of its young men in WWI and it has been suggested that this loss of so many men, proportionally speaking, in the prime of their lives contributed to the economic collapse that was to ultimately influence confederation with Canada.

 Earliest Recorded Mention of Bryant's Cove
By 1836 Bryant's Cove was a prosperous and growing settlement of 277 people, 171 of whom were Protestant Episcopalians and eighty-six were Roman Catholic.
By 1845 the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel ran Bryant's Cove's first school, and by 1857, with the population at 305, a Roman Catholic School was also built.
In 1981 children were educated from Kindergarten to Grade Three in Bryant's Cove, from Grades Four to Eight in Upper Island Cove, and from Grades Nine to Eleven in.

Family and Newfoundland The Patten's are a West of England family, especially prominent in Devonshire, but also during the 17th and 18th centuries to be found in Dorset (on the border with Somerset) and Hampshire.
In Newfoundland: Family tradition: Three Rowsell brothers of Huguenot ancenstry (the surname was originsally Rouselle), came to Newfoudnland from Poole or Bristol in the early 1700s; they settled in Bonavista Bay, Notre Dame Bay and Pushthrough (Fortune Bay and Hermitage district).
He was in Newfoundland by around 1751 and was involved in the fishery and in the building of ships and boats at Bell Island.

The alternative was a 2000 mile drive that included the rough roads across Labrador, a ferry across the broad St. Lawrence River, and the Atlantic crossing to Port au Basque, in order to return to Cow Head.
The high spot of this enforced trip was camping in central Labrador, in a spruce forest carpeted with brown and gray lichen - pristine, totally quiet, and dimly lit by a moonless sky - a mind boggling experience.

The oddly coloured lobster "looks curious … It was almost just the same as [being] boiled on one side," said Kirk Tulk, who caught the lobster in one of pots outside his home in Aspen Cove, in Hamilton Sound on Newfoundland's northeast coast.
The lower right part of the lobster's body is bright orange, as is its upper claw.
Tulk said he has been told that the unusual colouring may be due to a protein deficiency in the lobster's body.

A pair of NORTHERN PINTAIL at Arnold's Cove is very rare here for winter (with the exception of St. John's were there are always 200 plus that overwinter).
The last reported BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS for the Island was a flock of about 30 seen at Cape Spear on March 10.
