Manhattan is the name of an island alongside the lower Hudson River and also of one of the five boroughs that form the City of New York.
Manhattan is connected by bridges and tunnels to New Jersey to the west, and three New York City boroughs: the Bronx to the northeast and Brooklyn and Queens on Long Island to the east and south.
Manhattan is officially designated as the county seat of New York County.{{GR6}} This is meaningless for all practical purposes because there are no other towns or cities in New York County, which is wholly contained within the City of New York.
