Incessant rains and flash floods in the Siang river, as a result of overflows from the Tsang-po in Tibet, have claimed 14 lives and marooned 55 villages in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh over the last fortnight.
In Arunachal Pradesh, low-lying areas of the upper Siang district on the Indo-Tibet border were completely cut off from the rest of the state.
Floodwaters from Siang increased the water level in the Brahmaputra and inundated a number of villages in upper and lower Assam.

THE ambitious 11,000-MW Siang Upper project — which would have been the country's largest power project and the world's third largest — is likely to be scaled down to around 5,000 MW, mainly due to environmental concerns raised by China.
Had the Siang Upper project come up in its originally envisaged gargantuan size, it would have been third in terms of size in the world, after the Three Gorges Project (being developed by China) and the Itaipu project, which is already operational in Brazil.
Besides the Siang Upper, NHPC is developing the Siang Lower Project (with a capacity of 1,600 MW) and the Siang Middle Project (with a capacity of 1,000 MW) in Arunachal Pradesh.

The Siang is part of the mighty Brahmaputra system and enters India in the Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh.
Around 30 satellite pictures of the Siang river basin in eastern Tibet region and 25 images of the western part of Tibet were analysed.
Apang said the road link to Upper Siang district is still cut off from India and the Kargo and Nubo bridges, two of the biggest steel bridges in the state, were completely washed away and have to be rebuilt.

Asia’s longest bailey suspension bridge over river Deopani, about two km from Roing, has been damaged snapping road communication between upper reaches of lower Dibang Valley and upper Dibang Valley which would take at least three to four months to be normalized, border road engineers said.
Road link was also snapped bewteen East Siang, Upper Siang and West Siang due to washing away of bridge over river Sile near Pasighat.

Over 170 persons were rescued by the Indian Air Force from marooned villages in the upper reaches of the Brahamputra in Arunachal Pradesh, affected by flash floods, a Defence Ministry official said here today.
As the entire village was ``submerged'', the people had taken refuge on rooftops, treetops, and telephone poles and in small boats and rafts.
The low-lying areas of the entire Gelling Circle and Tuting sub- division of upper Siang district, bordering Tibet, had been submerged.
