Upper Silesia (Polish : ''Górny Śląsk'', German : ''Oberschlesien'', Czech : ''Horní Slezsko'') is the south-eastern part of Silesia, a historical and geographical region of Poland (Opole Voivodship and Silesian Voivodship) and of the Czech Republic (Silesian-Moravian Region).
The region is situated in the Silesian highlands, between the upper Oder and upper Vistula rivers.
Upper Silesia was formerly a province of Poland.

The Upper Silesian Industry Area or Upper Silesian Industry Region (Polish: Górnośląskie Zagłębie Węglowe, GZW) is a metropolitan area in Silesia, Poland, centered around Katowice in the Silesian Voivodeship.
(Katowice was previously the capital of the Katowice Voivodeship.) Its population is about 3.5 million, with 2.8 million comprising the Katowice urban agglomeration (Górnośląski Okręg Przemysłowy, GOP) and 0.7 million comprising the greater Rybnik area, the metropolitan area known as the Rybnik Coal Region (Rybnicki Okręg Węglowy, ROW).
Upper Silesian Industry Region lies in the historical regions of Upper Silesia and Zagłębie Dąbrowskie in southern Poland, in a basin located between the Vistula and the Oder rivers.
