Upper Soda Springs is on the banks of the Sacramento River in Dunsmuir, California, USA.
As early as the 1830s, a pioneer cattle drive along what was to become known as the Siskiyou Trail from Mexican-controlled California to settlements in Oregon stopped at Upper Soda Springs.
Now known as the Upper Soda Springs Resort, it was a destination for well-to-do Victorian Era travelers who would come to "take the waters" at the mineral springs.

The first known inhabitants of the Upper Soda Springs site were the Lockhart brothers who, in about 1851, set up a rustic stable and waystation at the Upper Soda Springs site for prospectors and mule train drivers traveling between the Central Valley and Yreka, California.
The original small inn had substantially expanded, had become known as the Upper Soda Springs Resort, and was owned and operated by Elda McCloud Masson (the daughter of Ross and Mary) and her husband, John Masson.
These next 30 years were the height of the Upper Soda Springs Resort, as fashionable travelers came to "take the waters" of the mineral springs at Upper Soda Springs.

One of note is entitled: "Upper Falls, Rock Creek." This is particularly interesting because Yellowstone does have a Rock Creek, but this same photo shows in another series as being in the Elk Mountains of Colorado.

This section of the Upper Owens always provides some enjoyable dry fly fishing, though the fish are small (except early season when the spawners are in).
Caddis puppa and emerger nymphs worked well, and there was even dry fly action during the caddis hatches in the flatter sections.
I tried the Lower Owens as the flows were down and fishing reports good, but 98 degrees in the shade was a bit too much for fishing fun.

Although an exact age for the Postpile flow still is not known, we believe that an age of less than 100,000 years, based on radiometric age determinations on rocks thought to be correlative, is more reasonable.
