Mr Salia said with better roads the Upper West Region's poverty would be reduced through improved agriculture, better access to health, education and other social services as well as attracting tourism, foreign and local investments in the region's economy.
Contributing to the statement, Dr. Konadu Apraku, Minister of Regional Co-operation and NEPAD, said a lot would have to be done on road construction in the Upper West Region and called for an extensive road network project for the development of the area.
He said for the government to remove the perception that because the region did not vote for the NPP it was suffering such neglect, it must embark on a serious road development in the area to erase the erroneous impression.

Although cassava and yam are grown extensively in the southern parts of Northern and Upper West Regions, their importance declines towards the north of the area where the cropping is overwhelmingly cereal- and legume-based.
Where cotton is grown, as in parts of Upper West Region, a large proportion of farmers tend to use at least some of their subsidised cotton fertiliser allocation (¢100 000 per bag) on maize, and their enhanced yields testify to its efficacy.
In Upper East Region, livestock owners complained of high mortality rates among their small ruminants, caused by severe scouring after the first flush of grass following the arrival of the rains in May. Newcastle disease is still responsible for poultry losses in several localities despite the availability of vaccination against it.

The Regional House of Chiefs will organize a forum at which the communiqué would be presented to the Regional Minister and District Chief executives in the region for a dialogue to come to a consensus on the way forward for funding of the work of chiefs in the region.

 UPPER WEST  REGION
A Ghanaian colonial agent from Anomabu, George Ekem was instrumental in convincing the local chiefs in the North to sign treaties of friendship with the British.
In 1897, a few years before the entire North (including Upper East and West) became a British Protectorate, he was captured by Samory, the famous slave raider, and was beheaded for aiding the white men.
Built by Gbollu Koro Liman in the latter part of the 19th century as a defence against Samory's slave raids, parts of the wall and its foundation are still visible.

In December 1982, the PNDC announced a plan to decentralize government from Accra to the regions, the districts, and local communities, but it maintained overall control by appointing regional and district secretaries who exercised executive powers and also chaired regional and district councils.
The hierarchy, called the Superior Court of Judicature, is composed of the Supreme Court of Ghana, the Court of Appeal, the High Court of Justice, regional tribunals, and such lower courts or tribunals as Parliament may establish.

The Regional Coordinating Council has directed district assemblies in the Upper West Region to factor into their Medium Term Development Plans the provision of at least one dam each year in their districts for irrigation.

Ambrose Dery, Upper West Regional Minister on Sunday called for full-scale investigations into the alleged illegal school fees being charged in some schools in the Upper West Region.
He said the payment of capitation grant to schools throughout the country covered both cultural and sports fees and those who were allegedly charging those fees separately were contravening the rules and would therefore be made to face the full rigours of the law.
Dery said those who were charging the illegal fees in their schools were enemies of the government and were therefore doing everything possible to sabotage policies that could be workable for so many years.
